A vision of ruffles and structured silk sweeps across the floor. The front row sits poised, cameras at the ready, tracking every movement with the kind of scrutiny usually reserved for a high-stakes auction. The air is thick with tension, yet entirely electric. With a bird-like grace, she throws her arms open, and the garment spills out. Ruffles explode into a gown, fabric encasing her like a crown. It is a descent fit for a queen, or at the very least, a masterclass in runway drama.

Every so often, a show transcends the typical fashion circuit and enters the realm of genuine art. While this year’s Fide Fashion Week glitters with various iterations of magic, Yumi Katsura—the Japanese couturier celebrated for her bridal mastery—remains in a league of her own. Her work is spellbinding and theatrical, but what truly resonates is her flair for the poignant.

Set to a lively score, the show begins on a light note. Summery gowns come to life as models glide down the runway with stoic poise. Crane motifs embellish cocktail dresses that lean into French influences—a nod to Ms Katsura’s current residence in Paris—without ever losing their Japanese soul. It serves as a sharp appetiser for the main course and a glimpse into the designer’s mindset. Even amidst the theatrics, there is a core of refined simplicity.

As the sequence unfolds, we are pulled deeper into a world heavy with fairytale elements and rich storytelling. The transition from wearable pieces into full-scale couture is seamless, the delivery feeling entirely timeless. Classic motifs find their voice in elaborate maxi gowns, dense ruffling, and extravagant headpieces. Figures resembling the snow queen, the empress, and the vixen fall into line like a masquerade party, each more provocative than the last.

Ms Katsura, while earnest in her craft, clearly possesses a sense of humour. As the finale approaches, a surprise waits for the audience. The final gown—a cape—illuminates with the Merlion mascot, followed quickly by the Marina Bay Sands logo.

In a bold closing move, the national anthem begins to play. To the beat of Majulah Singapura, the models emerge waving Singapore flags. The rigid runway personas break into genuine smiles, mirroring the crowd’s astonishment. The room rises, applauding with a level of glee rarely seen in such formal settings.

When Ms Katsura finally appears amidst the roar of the crowd, the drama reaches its peak. She is a queen saluting her court, yet she cuts an unconventional figure in a scarf, draped top, and red lipstick. Waving twin Singapore flags, her smile is contained but her energy is infectious as she moves from seat to seat, shaking hands with the front row.

With 35 designs displayed, the technical delivery was stunning, but the takeaway was far more personal. Behind the obsessive devotion to detail and the visual spectacle is a remarkably humble individual calling the shots.
